Macular Degeneration
AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION
The macula accounts for most of the retina’s visual function. If the macula is damaged, your vision becomes blurred or your central vision decreases.
If macular degeneration is severe, it can lead to blindness, so early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are important.
It is a degenerative eye disease that mainly appears in people in their 50s or older, but it can rarely occur in younger people, especially those with myopia.

01
In the early stage, there are
no noticeable symptoms.

02
After some progression,
objects may look shaky or wavy.

03
Eventually, objects look distorted,
and one area appears as if erased.
The macula is located at the very center of the retina, where images are focused and most photoreceptors are concentrated, and it plays an important role in vision.
Macular degeneration is a disease in which the macular area is damaged by various causes such as aging or genetic factors, leading to visual impairment.

Amsler Grid Self-Test
You can use the Amsler grid to easily check for changes.
- 01Test under bright lighting while wearing your usual glasses or contact lenses.
- 02Cover one eye and, from about 30 cm away, look at the round dot on the grid.
- 03Fix your gaze on the central dot, then note how the lines appear.
- 04Test the other eye the same way.
※ Amsler Grid Self-Test Results
If the grid lines look wavy, if the central dot is hard to see, if a line appears broken in the middle, or if any area looks blurry or distorted, macular degeneration may be suspected and a detailed eye examination is needed.
