We diagnose and treat
conditions that can threaten vision
Because retinal care is complex and critical,
it requires specialized clinicians and advanced equipment.

Epiretinal Membrane (Macular Pucker)
Epiretinal Membrane
An epiretinal membrane, also called a macular pucker, is a condition in which a thin membrane covers the surface of the macula due to cellular proliferation and collagen deposition. The macula is the area of the retina—the eye’s neural layer—where 90% of the cells that detect bright light are concentrated; it is the focal point and the most important area for forming central vision. When an abnormal membrane that should not be there grows over this area, it pulls on the macular nerve layer, causing the macula to swell (macular edema) or wrinkle, and the nerve layer is gradually damaged.
Eye without epiretinal membrane

Symptom: Blurry vision
The eye needs to be clear to see well, but
because a membrane has formed,
vision becomes impaired.

Symptom: Visual distortion
As the membrane forms, it can distort your vision.
The retina works like the film in a camera,
so when a membrane wrinkles it,
images look warped, just as they would on crumpled film.

Symptom: Objects appear closer in one eye
As the membrane forms, it pulls on the retinal tissue,
and a typical symptom is macropsia,
where objects appear closer and larger.

  • 03. Suddenly, it looks like there are floaters in the field of vision.
  • 04. At times, there are flashes of light.
